How do I avoid plagiarism?

Answer

Plagiarism is "any use of another's ideas, words, or created product without crediting the source" and could be deliberate or accidental.

Students are responsible for ensuring that any work submitted with their name on it is properly referenced, according to JCU Academic Policies .

Some tips to avoid Plagiarism are:

  • Put in quotations everything that comes directly from the text, and be sure to write down the words exactly as they are written.

  • Paraphrase, but be sure you are not just rearranging or replacing a few words.

  • Properly cite every piece of information that is not the result of your own research, or common knowledge. When in doubt, if a source is to be cited, cite it.

  • Ask a Reference Librarian how to avoid plagiarism if you are in doubt. They can help you to cite correctly and tell you when it is necessary.

Please, check our guide about Plagiarism to know more information and learn better how to avoid it!
